One of the first major banks to understand the power of microfinance, Citi works with microfinance institutions and investors to develop products, distribution mechanisms and financing that broaden and increase the scale of financial services outreach to low-income entrepreneurs. The company actively supports hundreds of microfinance institutions – including many FINCA affiliates – in more than 40 countries.
Citi has provided philanthropic support to FINCA for more than 20 years. Through the Citi Foundation, the company has supported the creation of new Village Banking groups in Guatemala, Jordan, Zambia and half-dozen other countries. Citi also has been an active supporter of FINCA’s research initiative, helping FINCA develop products that best serve clients. And—following Haiti’s deadly earthquake of January 12, 2010—Citi committed $400,000 to assist FINCA recapitalize its program.
